Welcome to Our Community

Tworoots LLC is proud to continue the tradition of exceptional coffee in Downtown Modesto by bringing the beloved Chocolate Fish Coffee & Roasters experience to 1030 J Street. We're taking over from Preservation Coffee & Tea, which served specialty coffee and tea in this location for over 13 years, preserving the reputation for quality and attention to detail established by the local coffee community.

Like our predecessors, we believe in creating an atmosphere where customers can learn about coffee, converse about current events, spend time with family, or conduct business. We're not just opening a coffee shop—we're honoring a legacy while bringing award-winning New Zealand coffee culture to this cherished Downtown Modesto gathering place.

1030 J Street has been a gathering place for coffee in downtown Modesto for more than three decades. The space became J Street Cafe in 1990, owned by Jim LaGrone, and quickly grew into a community hub throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. It later evolved into Serrano’s Social Club, one of Modesto’s earliest specialty-coffee pioneers, before reopening in April 2013 as Preservation Coffee & Tea, which carried the torch for nearly 13 years. Each chapter built on the last, making this address a cornerstone of Modesto’s coffee culture and a place where community, conversation, and craft have continuously converged.
